The Jar is done in homage of Dave Drake, the slave potter in the 1800s who was taught to read and write by Dr. Abner Landrum. Dr. Landrum owned Dave for some time in the early 1800's and had Dave to set type for the Edgefield Hive (A local newspaper) which Dr. Landrum owned. Dave was in high demand in Edgefield . He could turn the biggest jars of anyone there. He signed some of his ware and wrote poems on some.

This jar has all 26 of the poems Dave wrote which are cataloged in the book "I Made This Jar" by author Jill Koverman, published by The McKissick Museum. Number two and up to number twenty will have two more poems recently found.
